Cancun beaches
Cancun, being a large resort, counts and offers many beaches for all tastes. Some of the best beaches are located at the north tip. In Cancun you can find crowded and populated beaches with lots of services, as well as secluded beaches for you to enjoy tranquility. Playa del Carmen has miles of beaches. Great for swimming, relaxing and water sports. Not good for snorkeling as most corral close to shore is dead. Playacar is right next to Playa del Carmen and has beautiful beaches as well.
Puerto Aventuras has nice beaches and the snorkeling is much better here than anywhere northerly. Kantenah is a great snorkel beach but hard to access. There is only a single unpaved jungle road into the beach and if you blink you will miss the small sign on highway 307.
Akumal has great beaches, both sandy and natural. If you snorkel you will probably see a sea turtle here. Tulum is a hedonist beach style place great for backpackers who want to escape.
Way further south is the Costa Maya. This is total secluded rustic life like what Playa del Carmen was like twenty years ago. The beaches here are all natural. Surprisingly snorkeling here is no better than Akumal. Northern Side Beaches - Hotel Zone
These are the better beaches for water sports and swimmers. The waters are calm, the beaches are clean and there are nice hotels here too. The docks from which the Cruises, shuttles, and water taxis, etc. depart for Isla Mujeres are located here.
Playa Las Perlas
Location: 2.5 km at the beginning of the Hotel Zone Good place for swimming, relaxing and varied water sports. You can also get the shuttle to Isla Meujeres here. There are restaurants and bars located along the coast here as well.
Playa Linda
Location: 4 km in the Hotel Zone Dive tours, the Submarine and shuttle to Isla Mujeres is located here.
Playa Langosta
Location: km 5 in the Hotel Zone Swimming, water sports, restaurants and bars are located along this clean beach. There is also a dock with shuttles to Isla Mujeres and dive/snorkel tours.
Playa Tortugas
Location: km 6 in the Hotel Zone Swimming, water sports, restaurants and bars are located along this clean beach. There is also a dock with shuttles to Isla Mujeres and dive/snorkel tours.
Playa Caracol
Location: km 6 in the Hotel Zone near Punta Cancun This is a great beach for children because of the shallow flat sandy seabed. It is also one of the most crowded beaches along the strip. There are restaurants, bars and numerous activities here. East Side Beaches
General beach conditions here are the same as northern beaches. The sand is powder and kept clean of ocean debre. The water is a different story however. Unlike the northern tip which is somewhat sheltered by Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen which is protected by Cozumel, this strip of coast-line is protected by nothing. This means that the winds and currents come roaring up and produce very wavy conditions most of the time. Sediments are blown up which makes snorkeling an experience in pointlessness.
It can be a struggle just to stay alive on bad days and children should be supervised at all times here because of the undertows.
This doesn't paint a very pretty picture of the eastern beaches however they are really no different than many Florida beaches on a windy day and if you like playing in waves then these are the beaches for you. In fact the eastern beaches are better, even on a bad day, than Cape Cod beaches in the U.S. on a good day. Gaviota Azul
